Sarphoka, botanically designated as Tephrosia purpurea of the Fabaceae (Leguminosae) family, is a perennial copiously branched subshrub indigenous to the tropical and subtropical regions of the Indian subcontinent. In Unani and Greco-Arabic medicine, Sarphoka holds an authoritative rank among the alterative blood purifiers (Musaffiyat-e-Dam) and is classified as having a Hot and Dry (Garm-o-Khushk, 1st to 2nd degree; often cited as balanced in heat by some classical Tabibs) temperament.
