INDIAN RED OCHRE:
Gairo (Indian Red Ochre) is a natural clay earth pigment that is a blend of ferric oxide and different amounts of clay and sand. Gairo is also well known for its use in body painting in the Hindu religion for its holy festivals, cave paintings, and ritual burial contexts. It has also been used as internal and external medication, as a food preservative, in the tanning of hides, and as an insect repellent. The therapeutic use of Gairo includes piles and leucorrhoea. In Ayurveda, Gairo has been used for the treatment of piles for years. It is also used for body decoration, sun protection, mortuary practices, cave painting, bark painting and other artwork, and the preservation of animal skins, among other uses. Other therapeutic uses of Indian Red Ochre include blemishes, freckles, abdominal diseases, external bleeding, constipation, headache, inflammation, heart disease, liver disease, nose bleed, and uterine bleeding.
